Snippet Sunday - Require Login Middleware

Sunday snippets are bits of code that I’ve found useful in past projects. I post them here in hopes that someone else will find them useful. Most of these are Github Gists and you can follow them there too if you want.

I recently had to secure an entire site under authentication. Adding @login_required to all views seemed like a terrible idea. Naturally, the Django community pulled through and provided me with an awesome direction. Below is a snippet of middleware I found to secure each and every request coming from the django server. One caveat to note is that if you are using static file hosting through the django app in a development environment, those static files won’t be delivered until you login. One small, and manageable problem. Enjoy!

from django.conf import settings
from django.contrib.auth.views import login
from django.http import HttpResponseRedirect

class RequireLoginMiddleware(object):
Require Login middleware. If enabled, each Django-powered page will
require authentication.

If an anonymous user requests a page, he/she is redirected to the login
page set by REQUIRE_LOGIN_PATH or /accounts/login/ by default.
def __init__(self):
self.require_login_path = getattr(settings, 'REQUIRE_LOGIN_PATH', '/accounts/login/')

def process_request(self, request):
if request.path != self.require_login_path and request.user.is_anonymous():
if request.POST:
return login(request)
return HttpResponseRedirect('%s?next=%s' % (self.require_login_path, request.path))
